Amidst a weekend of dramatic giant-killings that left the Nedbank Cup wide open, Sekhukhune United held their nerve to secure a hard-earned 1-0 victory over the University of Pretoria at Tuks Stadium this Sunday.
In a match where the pressure was palpable following the shock exits of heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates just 24 hours earlier, “Babina Noko” showcased the composure required to navigate the treacherous waters of the Last 16.
A cagey encounter
The match began as a tense, tactical battle. With the tournament already witnessing major upsets, Sekhukhune approached the fixture with a disciplined, defensive-first mindest, while the hosts, AmaTuks, looked to exploit any sign of complacency.
Clear-cut opportunities were scarce in a physically demanding opening half. Sekhukhune's Vusumuzi Mncube signaled their intent early on, but his effort from a tight angle failed to find the target. As both sides traded fouls and struggled to find rhythm, the game remained deadlocked at the break.
The moment of magic
Recognising the need for more attacking impetus, head coach Eric Tinkler made decisive changes at halftime, introducing Tshepo Mokoane and Keletso Makgalwa to spark life into the final third.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 55th minute, and it was a moment of individual brilliance that settled the tie. Left-back Vuyo Letlapa, finding space roughly 35 yards out, unleashed a thunderous, curling left-footed strike that arrowed into the corner of the net, leaving the Tuks goalkeeper with no chance.
Holding the line
The final half-hour was a test of character for the visitors. AmaTuks, desperate to stay in the competition, pushed forward with renewed intensity. The hosts forced Sekhukhune's goalkeeper, Toaster Nsabata, into several crucial interventions, including back-to-back saves to deny Siphiwe Mtshweni and Prince Nxumalo.
Despite the late onslaught, Sekhukhune's defense - marshalled by Daniel Cardoso - remained resolute, expertly managing the game's tempo to see out the 1-0 win.
Looking ahead
With this result, Sekhukhune United join a diverse group of quarter-finalists, including Milford FC and the amateur outfit Jacksa Spears, who also made history this weekend. The draw for the quarter-finals is scheduled for Monday at 19h00, and with many of the tournament favorites already eliminated, the road to the trophy feels increasingly wide open for Eric Tinkler's men.
