Limpopo police arrested a 23-year-old suspect following a business robbery and shootout with police at Rapotokwane village under the Rust de Winter policing precinct on Monday.
Police confirmed that three suspects were involved in the business robbery, one suspect was arrested and other two managed to escape.
Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said: "It is alleged that three male suspects targeted a general dealer in the area. Two suspects reportedly entered the shop posing as customers. While at the counter, one of the suspects produced a firearm and threatened the employee, demanding cash. An undisclosed amount of money was taken.
"The second suspect allegedly moved behind the counter and stole several items, including cartons of cigarettes and a flash machine. The suspects then fled the scene and joined a third accomplice who was waiting in a black Toyota Yaris vehicle.
“While attempting to flee, the suspects encountered police officers who were conducting routine patrols in the area. A shootout ensued between the police and the suspects. During the exchange, one suspect was shot by the police. He was immediately transported to hospital under police guard and placed under arrest.”
Mashaba revealed that the suspects abandoned the vehicle on the side of the road. Police confiscated the vehicle and recovered one pistol with an empty magazine at the scene. The Police have opened cases of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The arrested 23-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Bela Bela Magistrate's Court once medically fit.
A manhunt for the remaining suspects is ongoing, concluded Mashaba.
