Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the summit of the Betway Premiership on Saturday night after a dominant 4-1 victory over Durban City at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng. Defender Thabang Matuludi stole the headlines with a brace of headers as Masandawana moved one point clear of Orlando Pirates.
Matuludi double sets the tone
The Brazilians controlled the contest from the outset and were clinical in front of goal. Matuludi opened the scoring in the 34th minute, rising unmarked to power home a header. He doubled the lead after the hour mark with another well-taken header from an Aubrey Modiba cross, completing his first goals in Sundowns colours.
Late goals seal the win
Substitute Iqraam Rayners made it 3-0 in the 79th minute, tapping home from a Siyanda Ndlovu cross. Durban City pulled one back late through Jean Lwamba, but Antonio van Wyk restored the three-goal cushion deep into stoppage time to complete a comprehensive win.
Brazilians back on top
The result lifts Sundowns to 26 points from 10 matches. They sit one point ahead of Pirates, who earlier defeated Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the Soweto Derby but have a game in hand.
Miguel Cardoso's side rotated following their midweek Carling Knockout progress and produced a dominant performance. Matuludi's contribution from defence will particularly please the coaching staff, while the team's attacking options continue to deliver.
What's next
Sundowns now turn their attention to upcoming fixtures, including a home clash against Lamontville Golden Arrows, as they look to maintain their position at the top of the log.
