Mamelodi Sundowns produced another emphatic performance on Tuesday night, brushing aside struggling Richards Bay 4-1 to maintain their position at the top of the Betway Premiership.
Playing at Princess Magogo Stadium just days after lifting the MTN8 title, Miguel Cardoso's side were clinical and dominant. Goals from Tashreeq Matthews, a brace by Iqraam Rayners, and a first strike for the club by Fawaaz Basadien secured a comfortable victory that extended Sundowns' unbeaten start to the league campaign.
Clinical from the outset
The Brazilians took the lead in the 18th minute. After patient build-up involving Siyanda Ndlovu and Cassius Mailula, Rayners held off two defenders before laying the ball into the path of Matthews, who finished powerfully past Ian Otieno.
Richards Bay responded quickly. Four minutes later, defender Lwandile Mabuya pounced on a failure to clear and fired home his first league goal of the season to level the scores.
Sundowns regained control before the interval. Matthews switched from scorer to provider, delivering an inviting cross that Rayners headed beyond Otieno in the 37th minute. The visitors went into half-time leading 2-1 and in complete command.
Second-half ruthlessness
Any hope of a comeback for the hosts evaporated early in the second period. Just three minutes after the restart, Rayners completed his brace with a composed close-range finish to make it 3-1.
The fourth goal arrived in the 59th minute. Teboho Mokoena cut the ball back into the area and Basadien, the left-back, steered a precise finish into the far corner for his first goal in Sundowns colours.
Cardoso's men then managed the game expertly, limiting Richards Bay to virtually no clear chances while enjoying the vast majority of possession and creating a succession of opportunities of their own.
League picture remains healthy
The result leaves Mamelodi Sundowns on 23 points from nine matches (seven wins and two draws), one point clear of Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand. Richards Bay remain rooted near the foot of the table with just three points from eight games and are still searching for their first win of the season.
This latest triumph continues a strong start to the 2026/27 campaign for the Tshwane gaints. Having already claimed the FIFA Africa-Asian-Pacific Cup and the MTN8, Sundowns now turn their attention to CAF Champions League qualifying against Angola's Wiliete SC later this week.
Once again, Masandawana showed the blend of control, quality and ruthlessness that has made them the early pacesetters in the Betway Premiership.
