Mamelodi Sundowns took a massive step toward the CAF Champions League semi-finals on Friday night, dismantling Malian giants Stade Malien 3-0 at a raucous Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The “Brazilians” displayed a clinical edge that has become their hallmark in continental competition, putting the tie firmly in their control ahead of the return leg in Bamako next week.
The breakthrough: VAR to the rescue
After a tense opening half-hour where the visitors sat deep and frustrated the hosts, the deadlock was finally broken in the 34th minute. Khuliso Mudau, ever the marauding presence on the right flank, latched onto a defence-splitting pass from Arthur Sales and fired home with composure.
While the linesman's flag initially threatened to dampen the celebrations, a swift VAR review overturned the offside call, confirming the goal and igniting the Pretoria crowd.
Colombian connection and the final blow
The second half saw no drop in intensity from Miguel Cardoso's men. In the 55th minute, the lead was doubled through Brayan Leon. The Colombian striker, who has been in scintillating form, finished clinically after some brilliant creative work by Nuno Santos. Santos, who vision throughout the match drew comparisons to elite playmakers, bagged his first of two assists on the night.
The final nail in the coffin came in the 74th minute. Substitute Iqraam Rayners, continuing his red-hot scoring streak, turned a pinpoint cross from Santos to make it 3-0. Despite a late VAR controversy involving a potential penalty for Sundowns that was ultimately dismissed, the job was effectively done.
Looking ahead
With a three-goal cushion and a vital clean sheet, Sundowns travel to Mali for the second leg on Sunday, March 22. While the Malian side will be desperate to pull off a miracle at the Stade du 26 Mars, the discipline shown by the South African champions suggests they have one foot firmly in the final four.
