Police neutralised four suspected cash-in-transit robbers in Gauteng

The police in Gauteng Province neutralised four heavily-armed suspects which were on the way to commit cash-in-transit robbery around Bronkhorstspruit on Friday afternoon.

Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that four cash-in-transit robbery suspects were fatally wounded during a shootout with the Gauteng police and other law enforcement officers in Bronkhorstspruit on Friday,07 November 2025, at approximately 17h30. The fifth suspect was arrested as police recovered three firearms, that includes two rifles, and magazines loaded with ammunition. A Mercedes Benz that was reportedly hijacked in Enkangala,Tshwane, was also recovered.

Masondo revealed that police from crime intelligence in Pretoria received an information about suspects who were going to commit a cash-in-transit robbery around Bronkhorstspruit.

He stated that the law enforcement officers utilised the given information which led to the confrontation with the suspects.

"A team of law enforcement officers operationalised the information. While on observation, the team spotted a white Fiat on the R25 towards Bronkhorstspruit, as they tried to stop it, the suspects started shooting at the law enforcement officers and a shootout ensued. Three suspects were fatally shot. A pistol and a rifle were recovered at the scene.

The second vehicle used by the suspects, a white Toyota Corolla, was spotted in the Welbekend area, the police attempted to stop the vehicle, and a shootout ensued, resulting in one suspect being fatally shot, while one suspect fled on foot. An AK 47 rifle with two magazines was recovered," Masondo said.

He further stated that further investigation led the police to the suspects' safe house in Dennilton,Limpopo Province, where explosives and a hijacked Mercedes Benz were recovered. One suspect was arrested.

He pointed out that the foiled robbery was a result of a collaboration between the SAPS Counter Intelligence Head Office,SAPS Gauteng TRT, SAPS Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit, SAPS Airwing(PTA), Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing,DPCI Gauteng Tracking Team, as well as private security companies as per the Eyes and Ears Initiative collaboration with Business Against Crime South Africa.

“We are working together in our commitment to ensuring that those who intend to commit crimes in the province are dealt with swiftly and decisively. I commend the officers involved in this operation for their bravery and professionalism. We will continue to work tirelessly to prevent and combat crime in Gauteng,” said the Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana.

He concluded that police are investigating a case of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms, amongst other crimes.
