The police in Gauteng neutralised two suspects and injured one during gunfight, the suspects were enroute to rob a courier delivery vehicle when intercepted in Kempton Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Gauteng police confirmed that received a tip-off about the suspects which were planning robbery around Ekurhuleni and then utilised that information which led to the bloody confrontation with the criminals.
"Police from crime intelligence received information about the suspects who were planning to rob a courier vehicle in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni.
"A team comprising of SAPS Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, DPC Tracking Team, DPCI Tracking Team, CAP Specialised Operations, Tracker Connect, Gemini Global Defence and Bad Boyz Security, was activated to be on a lookout for the suspects.
"While on the surveillance, the spotted the cars that matched the description given. The cars were followed until on R25 in Kempton Park. As the team was stopping the cars, the suspects in a white Volkswagen Jetta started shooting at the police and a shootout ensued.
Two suspects were fatally wounded and one sustained injuries and taken to hospital under police guard," said Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.
Masondo revealed that police found two firearms, blue lights and police reflector jackets inside the suspects' car.
He stated that the search for the suspects who fled in the other car is underway.
He also said that the recovered firearms will be taken for a ballistic test to determine if they were used in the commission of other crimes.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni who visited the crime scene applauded the team that foiled yet another robbery.
“I am still sending a message to the criminals that we have squeezed the space for them. Police are out in numbers to ensure that people in Gauteng are protected this season and we still strive to always be a step ahead of the criminals,” said General Mthombeni
