A 47-year-old police warrant officer stationed at the Maseru Port of Entry has been arrested on charges of corruption and extortion. He was taken into custody on Thursday, 27 August 2026, at approximately 15:30 after police executed a warrant for his arrest.
Alleged extortion at the border
While on official duty, the Warrant Officer allegedly stopped an unknown male traveller walking from the South African side towards Lesotho. He searched the man's bag and discovered cash amounting to R71,000.00.
The officer is accused of threatening to arrest the traveller for money laundering unless a bribe of R10,000.00 was paid. The traveller contacted his sister, the owner of the cash, and handed the phone to the police officer. To ensure her brother's safe passage into Lesotho, the sister instructed him to hand over the demanded amount.
After receiving the money, the Warrant Officer allegedly allowed the victim to cross the border with the remaining funds.
Investigation and charges
The victim formally reported the matter, and the case was immediately referred to the Free State Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit. Following a thorough investigation, a warrant of arrest was obtained and executed the same day.
Zero-tolerance stance reaffirmed
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia reaffirmed the province's firm stance against corruption within police ranks. He emphasised that criminal behaviour by law enforcement personnel will be dealt with decisively, without fear or favour.
Court appearance
The arrested Warrant Officer is expected to make his court appearance on Friday, 28 August 2026, facing charges of corruption and extortion.
