The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old male suspect in connection with a violent carjacking incident that recently gained widespread attention across social media platforms.
The apprehension was carried out by members of the Tactical Response Unit on Sunday, 17 May 2026, following a strategic operation in Zola, Soweto.
Investigation sparked by viral footage
The investigation was initiated after a viral video surfaced online showing a male suspect hijacking an Uber driver. The footage sparked significant public outcry and concern regarding the safety of e-hailing services in the region.
Acting on a tip-off related to the footage, JMPD officers tracked the suspect to a private residence in Zola 3. Upon entering the premises, law enforcement discovered two males and one female, noting that one of the men matched the physical description of the individual seen in the viral video.
Arrest and suspect response
When confronted by the Tactical Response Unit, the suspect claimed he had been preparing to surrender to authorities at the Jabulani South Africa Police Service station. Despite this statement, he was taken into immediate custody.
JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca has since commended the officers involved for their diligence and effective coordination, which led to the swift resolution of the case.
Commitment to public safety
The department has reiterated its commitment to removing violent criminals from the streets of Johannesburg. This arrest serves as a clear signal that individuals who target public transport and e-hailing services will face the full weight of the law. The JMPD continues to prioritise the safety of the city's residents through proactive enforcement and community-led intelligence.
