The crisis at Naturena deepened on Tuesday night as Kaizer Chiefs slumped to a demoralising 1-0 defeat against Richards Bay FC at the uMhlathuze Stadium. The result marks the fourth consecutive loss for the Soweto giants across all competitions, leaving the “Amakhosi” faithful in a state of growing despair.

A night of frustration

The tone for a difficult evening was set before the first while when key defender Inacio Miguel was forced to withdraw during the warm-up due to injury. He was replaced by Bradley Cross, but the reshuffled backline struggled to find its rhythm against a hungry “Natal Rich Boyz” side.

Despite a lively start and several changes to the lineup — including a debut for Nkanyiso Shinga — Chiefs looked disjointed. The home side missed a golden opportunity midway through the first half when Lundi Mahala fired wide of an open net after Bruce Bvuma had parried a powerful strike from Sanele Barns.

The breaking point

The deadlock was finally broken in the 69th minute. A swift counter-attack spearheaded by the clinical Sanele Barns exploited a slip by Bradley Cross. Barns squared the ball to Thulani Gumede, who showed immense composure to skip past a challenge and fire low past Bvuma.

Tactical struggles and fan discontent

Interim coach Cedric Kaze attempted to spark a comeback by introducing Mduduzi Shabalala and Glody Lilepo, but the substitutions were met with audible jeers from the traveling supporters. While Chiefs pushed late in the game, they failed to register a single shot that truly troubled Richards Bay keeper Ian Otieno.

In contrast, Richards Bay could have easily doubled their lead in stoppage time, with Bvuma forced into a string of heroic saves to deny Knox Mutizwa and Wandile Ngema.

What this means for Chiefs

The defeat is a bitter pill to swallow following a heavy loss in the Soweto Derby just days prior: Chiefs are now:

  • On a four-match losing streak (first time since 2023).
  • 11 points adrift of league leaders Orlando Pirates.
  • Effectively out of the title race and struggling to stay in the top-eight conversation.

Kaizer Chiefs will look to snap their losing streak when they host Durban City at FNB Satdium on March 15.
