In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Betway Premiership, Stellenbosch FC have officially confirmed the signing of former Orlando Pirates mainstay Olisa Ndah.
The 28-year-old Nigerian international joins the “Stellies” as a free agent on a deal reportedly spanning 18 months, ending weeks of intense speculation regarding his future following a surprise exit from the Buccaneers in late January.
A proven winner arrives
Ndah, a tower of strength in the heart of defence, arrives at the Danie Craven Stadium with a glittering CV. During his four-and-a-half seasons at Mayfair, he was instrumental in Pirates' cup dominance, lifting three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cups.
Despite being a fans favourite, his final year in Soweto was marred by recurring injuries and a shift in the defensive pecking order. After mutually parting ways with Pirates to seek more regular playing time, Ndah reportedly snubbed interest from North African and Middle Eastern clubs to remain in South Africa under the guidance of veteran coach Gavin Hunt.
The “Gavin Hunt” factor
The move marks a significant intent from Stellenbosch, who have struggled for defensive consistency following their exit from the CAF Confederation Cup group stages. Coach Gavin Hunt is understood to have personally overseen Ndha's assessment period over the last week.
“Olisa is a player with proven quality and experience at the highest level,” said Stellenbosch CEO Rob Benadie. “We are deliberate in our recruitment strategy… having assessed him closely, we are confident he will be a valuable addition to our squad.”
A Nigerian connection
Ndah becomes the fourth Nigerian player to pull on the Maroon jersey, joining current stars Ibraheem Jabaar and Kazie Enyinnaya. His arrival is expected to fill the void left by the injured Thabo Moloisane and provide a veteran presence alongside the likes of Mosa Lebusa.
Stellies fans won't have to wait long to see their new “No. 99” in action. The club has confirmed that Ndah is eligible for selection and could make his debut as early as Wednesday evening, when Stellenbosch host Magesi FC at the Daven Craven Stadium.
