Stellenbosch FC reignited their Betway Premiership campaign today, March 21,2026, with a clinical 2-1 victory over Chippa United at Athlone Stadium.
The win, powered by a masterclass from Orlando Pirates loanee Tshegofatso Mabasa, ends a frustrating streak of three consecutive draws and propels the Winelands side into the crucial top-eight bracket.
From the first whistle, Stellenbosch looked determined to capitalise on their territorial dominance. While Chippa United threatened early through Anasele Bonani, the home side soon found their rhythm by exploiting the flanks.
The Mabasa blitz
The game was decided in a whirlwind three-minute window during the first half:
- 32nd Minute: Langelihle Phili, a constant menace on the right wing, delivered a high-quality cross. Mabasa met it with a thunderous header that goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi could only parry into his own net.
- 35th Minute: Before the visitors could regroup, Mabasa struck again. This time, defender Enyinnaya Kazie (Godswill) provided the service, and Mabasa's placement was impeccable, guiding a second header into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
Late drama at Athlone
Stellebosch seemed to be cruising toward a clean sheet, but the closing stages tested their resolve. In the 81st minute, Chippa United were awarded a penalty following a handball in the box. Sinoxolo Kwayiba stepped up and coolly converted, setting up a frantic finish.
Deep into stoppage time (90+4'), the home side was reduced to ten men when substitute Wonderboy Makhubu received a straight red card for a reckless challenge. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Stellies held firm to secure the maximum points.
Looking ahead
The victory sees Stellenbosch climb to 8th place, keeping their hopes of a strong season finish alive. They will look to extend their unbeaten league run when they travel to face Richards Bay in their next fixture.
For Chippa United, the loss leaves them just two points above the relegation playoff spot, heightening the pressure for their upcoming home game against Siwelele FC.
