The Jewish Council of Australia has issued a strong media release condemning the Israeli Government's decision to forgo criminal charges over the killing of Zomi Frankcom, an Australian aid worker.

Executive Director Sarah Schwartz criticised the outcome, stating that Israel investigating itself and concluding that nobody is criminally responsible represents an absolute impunity that insults the memory of aid workers like Frankcom. Pointing to further acknowledgements from the Israel Defense Forces regarding the shooting of a five-year-old girl named Hind Rajab and the burial of paramedics in a mass grave, the Council argued that such war crimes persist precisely because the military is shielded from meaningful accountability.

Criticising Australia's diplomatic response

Foreign Minister Penny Wong acknowledged that the decision falls short of expected accountability, yet the Jewish Council argues that issuing a stern warning or merely calling in the ambassador is insufficient. The organisation has urged the Australian Government to go beyond individual sanctions targeting a handful of settlers.

Instead, the Council demands that Minister Wong take decisive action by immediately expelling Israeli Ambassador Amir Maimon (referenced as Ambassador Newman in the text) and imposing comprehensive country-level sanctions on Israeli state institutions that facilitate ongoing impunity.

Seeking justice for Zomi Frankcom and countless victims

Zomi Frankcom, an aid worker with World Central Kitchen, was killed alongside six international colleagues during an Israeli strike in April 2024. Meanwhile, five-year-old Hind Rajab was fired upon alongside family members in her vehicle while paramedics rushing to her aid were also killed. Stressing that these victims and countless other civilians deserve true justice rather than a mere phone call, the Jewish Council maintains that the Australian Government must stand firm, abandon its culture of leniency, and demand systemic accountability.
