The South African Police Service (SAPS) has put an end to months of speculation regarding the leadership of law enforcement in KwaZulu-Natal. National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola officially announced on Sunday that Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been reappointed as the Provincial Commissioner for a second five-year term.

The announcement was made during a high-level meeting between General Masemola, the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Thami Ntuli, and the provincial police management.

A call for unity and discipline

General Masemola emphasised that the period of uncertainty regarding the province's leadership is now over. He called on the provincial management to offer their unwavering support to Mkhwanazi, noting that the best way to do so is through disciplined service.

“The only support you can give to him is through taking orders and doing your job,” General Masemola stated.

Beyond internal management, the National Commissioner urged Deputy Provincial and District Commissioners to adopt a community-centered approach to policing. He challenged leaders not to “police communities in their absentia,” but rather to integrate residents into crime-fighting strategies to foster local accountability.

A change of heart for the greater good

Accepting the reappointment, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi revealed that he had initially planned to retire and go on holiday starting April 1st, having promised his family he would only serve a single term.

However, after discussions with the National Commissioner regarding the critical need for continuity and service to the people of KZN, he decided to reconsider and make himself available for the nation.

Mkhwanazi's key priorities for the next five years involve a multi-faceted approach of leadership, including a primary focus on reducing crime, attaining a clean audit for the provincial SAPS, and ensuring that residents remain satisfied with the level of service provided to them.

Looking ahead

With Mkhwanazi remaining at the helm, the focus shifts entirely to operational stability and the safety of the province. The General sent a clear message to his colleagues that he expects nothing less than full cooperation and support as they work toward making the province safer for both law-abiding citizens and visitors. By bridging the gap between the police and public, the leadership aims to create an environment where criminals are deterred and the community feels genuinely protected.
