Mamelodi Sundowns marched back to the top of the Betway Premiership table last night with a clinical 2-0 victory over Orbit College FC at Olympia Park.
Despite a heavily rotated squad, the defending champions secured their seventh consecutive league win, moving three points clear of title rivals Orlando Pirates.
The Brazilians' head coach Miguel Cardoso opted for a strategic lineup, resting several key starters ahead of Friday's crucial CAF Champions League quarter-final. However, the depth of the Pretoria giants proved too much for the hosts.
Match highlights: A second-half surge
The first half was a display of dominance without the clinical edge. Sundowns controlled 78% of the possession, but a disciplined “low block” from Orbit College kept the score line level at the break.
The deadlock was finally broken just three minutes into the second half:
- 48th Minute: A beautifully worked team goal saw Nuno Santos cushion a header into the path of Miguel Reisinho, who swept the ball home from close range to score his first-ever Betway Premiership goal.
- 60th Minute: The lead was doubled when Khuliso Mudau was brought down in the box by former Sundowns defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele. Iqraam Rayners stepped up to the spot, emphatically smashing home his 10th league goal of the season.
The title race at a glance
With this victory, Sundowns have firmly re-established themselves at the top of the log. However, the race remains razor-thin as Orlando Pirates hold a game in hand and could reclaim the top spot later tonight.
“A dark day” – Cardoso voices fixture frustrations
Despite the win, Coach Miguel Cardoso did not hold back in his post-match interview, describing the scheduling as a “dark day for South African football.”
“I think no one in South Africa should be able to play a Champions League match and have to play a Championship match three days before. We should be provided conditions to be successful in representing the country at an international level.” — Miguel Cardoso stated.
The win provides a morale boost for Masandawana, but the physical toll of the congested fixture list remains a primary concern for the technical team.
Sundowns shift their focus immediately to continental glory as they host Stade Malien in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals this Friday.
