Super Eagles star Stanley Nwabali bids emotional farewell to Chippa United
In a move that has sent ripples through the Betway Premiership, Chippa United have officially confirmed the departure of Nigerian international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
The announcement, made on Thursday, 5 February 2026, brings an end to a transformative four-year spell for the shot-stopper in the Eastern Cape.
A mutual parting of ways
The club revealed that the 29-year-old goalkeeper formally submitted a request to leave, which was granted following a period of “careful consideration”. Despite having signed a three-year contract extension in 2024, Nwabali expressed a desire for a new challenge.
“We would like to sincerely thank Stanley Nwabali for the years of service, commitment, and professionalism he has shown,” the club stated. “His contribution to the Chilli Boys will always be appreciated, and we wish him success in the next chapter of his career.”

Joining from Nigeria's Katsina United in 2022, Nwabali's rise has been nothing short of meteoric. During his time with Chippa United, he:
- Made 76 appearances across all competitions.
- Kept 25 clean sheets, establishing him as one of the league's elite keepers.
- Cemented his status as Nigeria's No. 1, notably leading the Super Eagles to a runner-up finish at AFCON 2023 and a bronze medal at the recent AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
“More than a Family”
Nwabali took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message with the supporters and staff, emphasising the bond he formed in Gqeberha.
“It was more than a family,” Nwabali wrote. “To my lovely teammates, dear coaches, amazing fans, and the best chairman in the world… I leave with a heart full of gratitude and a lifetime of cherished memories. This isn't just a farewell; it's an appreciation for every moment you've given me.”
Where to next?
While Nwabali has not yet confirmed his next destination, his departure has reignited long-standing transfer rumours.
There is a possibility for Nwabali to join Kaizer Chiefs or Raja Casablanca or European/Saudi clubs because numerous reports linked him with those clubs.
The timing of the exit, coming shortly after the January window, suggests that Nwabali may have a pre-contract or a deal waiting in a league with an open registration window, or he may be preparing for a move as a free agent in the coming months.
