The South African Police Service (SAPS) has intensified its efforts to disrupt illegal drug trafficking in Limpopo, following the arrest of two foreign nationals and the seizure of nearly a tonne of dagga valued at approximately R1.5 million.
Roadblock operation at Baobab Tollgate
On Friday, 18 September 2026, at around 11:00, members of the Beitbridge Port of Entry Task Team were conducting a roadblock at Baobab Tollgate in the Vhembe District when they stopped a white Toyota Hilux fitted with a canopy.
The vehicle was driven by a 32-year-old man, accompanied by a 41-year-old passenger. Both individuals are Tanzanian nationals.
During the inspection, the occupants told officers they did not have the keys to the canopy's padlock. This raised suspicion, and police directed them to the Beitbridge border facility for a more thorough examination.
Dagga discovery and arrest
At the facility, officers opened the canopy in the presence of the suspects and discovered 33 bags of dagga weighed a total of 991.5 kilograms. The consignment has an estimated street value of R1.5 million.
Both men were arrested and are expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate's Court on Monday, 21 September 2026, on charges of dealing in dagga.
Provincial Commissioner commends officers
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers praised the team for their vigilance and operational alertness.
“Vigilance and teamwork remain our strongest weapons against drug trafficking,” Scheepers said.
SAPS confirmed that the arrest forms part of ongoing operations aimed at disrupting the illegal trafficking of drugs in the province.
