The South African Police Service(SAPS) at Morokweng in North West investigating murder of 10-month-old baby girl which was found dead with head injuries and bruises on her body at Botsalano Section on Friday.

According to police statement,initial reports suggest that the baby's mother left her in the care of a friend on Thursday,18 January 2024.Later at about 20:00,the neighbour's 11-year-old boy,went to her house and indicated that the baby's grandmother sent him to fetch the baby.She then handed the baby over to the 11-year-old baby.

Police statement reads,sadly,the baby was found dead by the friend in her yard the next morning(Friday) and the police were immediately called to the scene.Emergency and Medical Rescue Services(EMRS) declared the baby dead on the scene.

Police has confirmed that the boy that found the baby dead will be taken social workers for counselling and the post-mortem will be conducted to found out what caused the child's death.

"The 11-year-old boy,who is currently kept under the supervision of his parents,will be evaluated by a Social Worker.He will be dealt with in accordance with the Child Justice Act,2008(Act No. 75 of 2008).A post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,"said police.

The SAPS is requesting anyone who has information about the death of the child to get in touch with police.

Abalone poacher appears in court in Gqeberha

The South African Police Service's specialised unit known as Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation(HAWKS) in Gqeberha has arrested male suspect for abalone poaching and supposed to appear in court today.

Police said a 35-year-old suspect will appear in Gqeberha Newlaw Court on 22 January 2024 after his arrest by the Economic Protected Resources(EPR) team of Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks in Gqeberha jointly with Dark Water Operations,Department of Environmental,Forestry and Fisheries(DEFF) and South African Police Service Port of Entry members on 20 January 2024 by the sea at Noordhoek,Gqeberha.

According to police statement,it is alleged that on 9 December 2023 at about 04:00,EPR members received information indicating where a rubberduck was about to offload abalone onto a vehicle.The members arrived at the scene and found the rubberduck stuck on the sand where people were in the process of offloading the abalone but fled the scene on seeing the police.The members confiscated 26 bags of abalone containing 5700 units weighing about 1000 kg and diving equipment.

Police adds that the team has since been on the lookout for the alleged perpetrators until on 20 January 2024 when the information was received which led to the arrest of the suspect in his diving gear while about to enter the sea at Noordhoek in Gqeberha.

Three people drowned over the weekend in KZN

The police in KwaZulu-Natal are urging people to be careful and prioritise safety around water follows the drowning of three people in different locations across the province.

"On 21 January 2024,members from Port Shepstone Search and Rescue,Durban K9 SAR and M17 Rescue recovered the body of a 32-year-old male that drowned after he was fishing and slipped and fell into the lagoon.

"A 30-year-old- man also drowned on 21 January 2024 in the Ncakuza River,Sawoti area,Ugu District.

A third drowning incident was also reported yesterday at Umtamvuna River,Port Edward where a 28-year-old male tried to cross the Umtamvuna river near the water works pump station when he slipped and drowned,"police said.
