R4.1m of counterfeited US Dollars discovered by police in Durban

The South African Police Service(SAPS) has confirmed a discovery of R4.1 million of counterfeited foreign currency during a police raid in some of the hijacked buildings in Durban CBD on Tuesday morning.

According to police,at least 123 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested during an early integrated operation which also saw the recovery of counterfeit US Dollars equivalent to R4.1 million at Point,Durban CBD on Tuesday morning.

Different state-organs raided dozens of hijacked buildings in a mission to fight illegal activities which are taking place in the center of Durban.

Police said a multidisciplinary operation involving the police,metro police,correctional services,home affairs and other law enforcement agencies was aimed at stamping the authority of the state and raiding of hijacked buildings in and around the Durban CBD.Six buildings were raided and one of them was found to be a municipality-owned building which was illegally occupied,and a person who was allegedly collecting rent money from illegal residents of that building was taken in for questioning.

In that operation,the police seized hundreds of ammunition and liquor,and disconnected water and electricity which was connected illegally.

Police added that during the operation,a total of 117 rounds of ammunition of various calibre of firearms and large amount of liquor were recovered and seized.Two of the hijacked building were disconnected of water and electricity which were connected illegally.One suspect was also arrested after he was found in possession of cocaine and crystal meth as well as an undisclosed amount of money.

The investigation is continuing as the police are searching for suspects who are believed to be in possession of illegal firearms.

Cloned police car found in Sedibeng and suspect arrested

The 44-year-old suspect was arrested in Walkerville,Sedibeng after a discovery of cloned police car and is linked to robberies in Gauteng.

The police operation was conducted by JHB Crime Intelligence and Soweto K9 Unit members.

During the operation,police discovered a cloned marked Volkswagen Golf with police registration number plates and police call signs,a white VW Polo fitted with blue lights and sirens,one stolen R5 rifle and police reflector jackets and several SAPS number plates.

Police said the suspect may be linked to robberies in Gauteng.Police believe that these vehicles were utilised during truck hijackings and courier vehicle robberies.The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.Further arrests are possible as the investigation continues.
