Mamelodi Sundowns crowned as inaugural African Football League Champions 2023

Mamelodi Sundowns has been crowned as undisputed inaugural African Football League Champions 2023 after beating Wydad Casablanca by 3-2 on aggregate score at Loftus Versfeld Stadium,Pretoria.

The victory of Sundowns was guaranteed by two goals which were netted by Peter Shalulile and Aubrey Modiba.

Shalulile opened the scoring in the first half in an added time and then Modiba scored a second goal on the 52rd minutes.

Sundowns came in that game trailing behind after it was beaten by 2-1 in an away match in Casablanca,Morocco.

Mokwena's boys welcomed the Wydad knowingly very well that their encounter is not an easy target to defeat even away home.

So Sundowns' away goal that was scored in Morocco gave them an advantage and motivation to return the favour in front of their supporters which were full-packed the stadium.

Mamelodi Sundowns as AFL Champions has pocketed a fat-check of US$4,000,000 and Wydad as runner-up received US$3,000,000 and then clubs which exited the competition in the semi-finals got US$1,700,000 and those exited on the quarterfinals consoled with US$1,000,000.

In the early stages of the competition Mamelodi Sundowns played against the likes of Petro de Luanda of Angola,Al Ahly of Egypt and Wydad Casablanca.

And Wydad Casablanca faced the likes of Enyimba of Nigeria and ES Tunis of Tunisia before reaching African National League final.

The African Football League(AFL) was introduced on 28 November 2019 by President of FIFA,Gainni Infantino.

It was initially launched as Africa Super League on August 2022 and was expected to include twenty-four top African clubs before being scaled down to eight teams for its inaugural campaign.

The AFL final has been attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and on Saturday he was present at FNB Stadium to watch the Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and its archrival Orlando Pirates and in both matches he was accompanied by Patrice Motsepe as President of CAF.
